The Obligatory Valentines Day Post

Today’s Music: Matthew Sweet – Girlfriend

“Buy roses.”
“Buy Chocolate!”
“SHE WON’T BELIEVE YOU LOVE HER UNLESS YOU BUY A LOAD OF CRAP!!!”

Meh.

Things I really don’t like about Valentines Day:
– Anyone that ever grew a flower for money
– Some of the music that is repurposed. Fiona Apple transcribed for harp and clarinet does not give me the warm fuzzies
– The franticicity. In all sincerity, love should be celebrated.
Every. Single. Day. I don’t understand why there’s such freneticness around a manufactured holiday. Seriously, stuff starts showing up now the day after Christmas.
– Hallmark. The perfect words for that special someone. One point eight million special someones. Stop monetizing my emotions.
And they’re never stacked with the right size envelopes.

Things I love about Valentines Day:
– I cherish and adore The Most Wonderful Girl In The Universe. All the time.
Valentines Day is when my behavior looks absolutely normal.
(Actually, it’s the only day my behavior looks absolutely normal.)
(Except for Dia De Los Muertos, but that’s a different post…)
– With a little bit of cleverness, it’s easy to avoid all the other crazies.

I’ll try to leave work on time tonight. That should get me home a little before TMWGITU. I’ll have time to spread the blanket in the living room, set up some other effects (she reads this blog, so I can’t be too specific), and get ready for our mid-winter picnic.
I’ll get in the kitchen and start cooking. We have fresh mozzarella, creme fraiche, salmon and cherry tomatoes.
It will be delicious.
While the salmon is in the oven, I’ll make the whipped cream. It will have a smidge of vanila and a dash of sugar.
All of that will fit nicely in the desert pastry shells.
She’ll get home, and I’ll help her out of her coat, give her a kiss and a long hug.
I’ll tell her that I love her, several times, even though she already knows. It’s written on my face and everything I do.
Maybe I’ll pour her a drink, maybe just a soda.
We’ll sit on the blanket and share a meal prepared with love, and eaten with love.
I’ll tell her I love her a bunch more times.
At some point, I’ll slide in behind her and give her a back rub.

After that, who can say
(We both have to work Friday, so probably just go to sleep next to each other and wake up next to each other)
(She’ll probably steal the blankets.)
(Again.)

The only difference between tomorrow and a regular day will probably be that tomorrow, everyone is in a tizzy of love, instead of just us…

  3. Someone who is as demonstrative as you, when it comes to love, should get annoyed with all this Valentine’s Day hoopla. I think everyone could take a lesson from the Guapo book of love. 🙂 Yes, I said that.
Sounds like a very sweet and romantic evening. Enjoy your plans and that delicious meal.

  7. What a wonderful eve you have planned! (Of course my brain starts thinking of the ONE question: “And how is this night different than all the other nights??” The answer? “Creme fraiche!”) (The love, well, that is *always* there.) It sounds beautiful. Have a happy!

      • Ha ha … so find one and hide it in case you need it.

As for us, I received my typical Valentine of … brace yourself … .black licorice. (There is a reason – from Christmas to early April we have Christmas, each of our birthdays, and our anniversary).

Of course I gave her a nice necklace I brought back from my trip that actually is her birthday present (which is in a month). Besides, I wanted her to have it before the bill arrives on the credit card statement.

  12. After seeing what you have planned, I’m thinking maybe I let my husband off too easily by telling him I don’t want to do anything…

We’re not Valentine’s Day people. He treats me special all the time. Really he does. And I suspect your lady feels the same. 🙂

And I think I may have found the right guy As we are going on a brewery tour this evening to all of our ‘spots’ in da hood that we love. • The true test of love after a pub crawl is how you react to each other the next day, after you’ve seen each other at your drunken stumbling best!
(My girl just laughs at me, but quietly, to not upset the hangover.)

      Have a great time, Speedo!

  22. A tizzy of love! I love it! You are obviously one of the special ones (as is my lovely Mr S) We met at the end of October, I was proposed to on 4th January and we married that year in August, having know each other only about 10 months. This is our 47th year together come October and the ‘tizzy of love’ is still with us!

Love to you two, hope you have a wonderful evening and feel properly smug that the rest of the world catches up with you today. 🙂

All the best to you both 🙂

  23. Fantastic! Way to treat each other right every day and today too! You’re very lucky to have one another. 🙂
Tried to boycott Vday myself for all of your reasons above, but the hubs wasn’t having it. Another excuse to give him a bouquet of food. Today’s bouquet = 6 salamis. Past bouquets = candy bars with jerky, and chocolate covered fruit. Practical, pretty, and tasty. We won’t be doing anything romantic though. I’d just end up puking in his mouth. 😦

  24. A wonderful Valentine’s agenda! So, I’m wondering if you would consider providing consulting services to other mere males? Actually in all seriousness, my hubby was wonderful on Valentine’s Day (yesterday for us)

  25. Me? I prefer DDLM to Hallmark Day, which is what I have called it for years. I hope you and TMWGITU enjoy the quiet whilst the rest of the attached and desperate world franticks.

  26. Such a romantic. It’s no surprise that women the world over break down in tears at the knowledge that your heart belongs to another.

And while I think you’re speaking to a larger point and perhaps not intending it literally, I think you should give professional flower-growers a break. A lot of them are doing what they love, and while they are trying to make a profit, that’s probably not what drove most of ’em into the flower biz in the first place.

    Happy Valentine’s, Guap!

  31. Nicely said, Guap. Love her every day – that’s the best Valentine!

Your list does remind me of my daughter’s FB status yesterday. Wrote she:
“Yes, let’s celebrate Christians being persecuted by Romans. Forget the story of the saint Valentine’s Day is supposed to honor. No instead, buy stuffed gorillas, send our kids to school with cardboard squares stamped with Barbie or Batman with moronic phrases, and fight for a dinner reservation at an overpriced restaurant.

I really don’t care about how we as Americans commercialize holidays. They’re fun. But this holiday grates on my nerves.”

    • Thanks Stacy!
Sadly, the significance of many holidays fades over time to where it’s just a day off or a note on the calendar…
Though I agree with your daughter’s sentiments.

  32. Pure fantasticitude!! (As opposed to Fantasticicide, which of course is dying by fantastic). Any guy who can successfully combine, salmon, whipped cream, a back rub, and an unValentines deserves several smooches and a slap on the butt from TMWGITU. I hope it was splendid….. 😉
