It’s your problem too.

Today’s Music: Tom Petty – I Won’t Back Down
Days Til Spring: 63

Guapola will return with
FRIDAY FOOLISHNESS

Unless SOPA or PIPA pass. then there’s no telling how fast Hotspur, with his images of Unicorns, or H.E. Ellis with her Star Trek references, or Kayjai with her Doritos, or Sandylikeabeach with…Actually, she should be fine. Or my music of the day will get our asses yanked out of the virtual world and thrown into all too real legal turmoil.

So do something. It will affect you.

Many websites are blacked out today to protest proposed U.S. legislation that threatens internet freedom: the Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). From personal blogs to giants like WordPress and Wikipedia, sites all over the web — including this one — are asking you to help stop this dangerous legislation from being passed. Please watch the video below to learn how this legislation will affect internet freedom, then click the ribbon up top to take action.

    • Cool. I post a bunch of links and you do even more, John
I’d be pissed if I couldn’t access your site, and there’d be very little you could do to appeal it.

  3. I published before I heard about this, but I support it 100%. Good post.

    • Thanks Dan.
If you go to your Dashboard page, under settings, there’s a Stop SOPA/PIPA link.
Just go to that and click Add The Ribbon near the top (2nd choice).
It will drop it right in.

Of course, there’s always Slaughterhouse Five….
(that’s all I can pull off the top of my head, and wikipedia is down today)

  6. damn Americans! no offense to Americans, as I am Canadian, and we are pretty much harmless followers of Americans and their dumb laws that our even dumber government will perhaps follow suit to

    • Well said, Sightsnbytes.
My wife already knows that when things get too weird here, we are uprooting to Canada.
Sadly, too weird in the US quickly becomes the norm…

  8. I’m sick to my stomach when I think of how our freedom is slipping away. We have to start paying attention to what’s going on!! Before it is too late. We need to do whatever we can including praying for this country!

  9. Internet piracy sucks. But I have been guilty of plagiarizing a wiki article or two. I’ve learned my lesson!

    • Right now, you can go back and just add a linkback giving credit to Wikipedia, Lily.
If this passes, you can potentially get tossed in the hoosegow. And you wouldn’t know until after it happened.

    • You were the first person I thought of when I saw the news about Wiki shutting down for a day. Is that a good thing?

      • I’m touched, but I’d be a little nervous to find out what it was you would want to come here for answers about….
though to be fair, I don’t think me and wikipedia really cover the same material. Until I get approval for the “Physics of Sliding Naked On A Bar” article I’ve written….

  11. Hi,
Yes if this gets passed it is going to affect everyone in some way World Wide, No Government anywhere in the world should have control of the net. I also have my ribbon up in support.

    • You’re absolutely right, Magsx2.
And I saw your ribbon. Looks good on you!
Wordpress kept failing when I tried to do the full blackout page, so I went with this instead…

  12. Great post! My entire FB newsfeed is outraged by this. The pros definitely outweigh the cons of this bill, and it can easily be used for malace instead of good.

    Like

    • Well, the nature of the bill concentrates so much power in corporate/gov’t hands. There really is no way to avoid the massive potential for abuse and censorship, rlellis55
I’m actually glad and kind of impressed at the massive response and coverage there’s been on this.

    • Me too, life is a bowl of kibble.
It’s not the anti-piracy intent, it’s the way it’s written.
If a record label doesn’t like that a little girl posted a video of herself singing along to a song, they can shut down the site with minimal effort.

That’s a bit drastic, forgetting about all the other censorship mechanisms built in.

  17. Importance aside, this is hardly the pointless silliness I’ve come to expect from you. If I wanted serious and activism-inspiring, I’d be reading Rush Limbaugh’s blog.

    EG, I’m disappointed.

    Like

    • Can’t all be silliness, WG.
Because if this passes, I have to expect that I’m on someone’s list somewhere to get shut down.
Then where would we be? Aside from happy I’d been shutdown, I mean…

  20. Thanks for the shout out and for spreading the word on the protest. I blacked out my page today – just brought it back up about 30 minutes ago. I also emailed my congress people since they are the ones voting on it though they don’t always listen to me.

I was able to get through by phone to one senator’s office. The line at the other one was busy all day.
Also read that individual senator web pages were crawling because of the traffic volume.
