Today’s Music: Delta Rae – Bottom of the River
Slightly longer than usual tangent on Today’s Music: John Phillips and I have been going back and forth on a sameness we’ve been hearing in some music genres lately. He commented that it’s ok if they sound the same as long as the sound is good.
Today’s Music has a heavy gospel-y sound that it seems a lot of bands are using these days.. Do some of the tracks sound the same? Maybe.
But like John says, it’s a great sound! Hope you like it.
Oh, and I have no idea what the hell is going on in this video.
Another week that was. And that I really hope will never be again. I went from feeling rundown and overworked to being sick. Thanks flu!
So what does one do when one is sick? Why, one reads blogs of course! (And apparently refers to ones self in the third person…) Here’s some of what I saw this week. Emily (@ The Waiting) told me waaaay too much about the interaction of a baby’s digestive system with raisins. Hilariously vile. My Cyber House Rules finally took her place in a hopefully never-ending summer camp. And Grippy wrote up another great therapeutic thursday.
Thanks to them, and everyone else out there for great stuff to read, all week long!
(One other note, If those who are so inclined could visit http://2013.bloggi.es/ and nominate Trifecta for a bloggie in the “Topical” category, they would really appreciate it. And, as a lot of you know, they’re a great site with some fantastic authors!

Last week’s poll answers didn’t make me ill. but a lot of them didn’t make me hungry either – seriously, some of you have some very…odd appetites. We asked what you loved for your midnight snack . Here’s what you said. (As always, my comments are delicious in italics.)
the meat-cake at the back of the fridge -Miss R
(Could be meat. Could be cake. Could be George!)

(Seriously, don’t ever read the label when it’s that late!)
If I’m feeling choosy, hummus & pretzels. Otherwise… everything in the fridge

Ahhh well that would be telling?
Geoff
(Your secret is perfectly safe on the internet.)
snacks? we don’t need no stinking snacks…pass the wine! – (polysyllabic)
(Wine without crackers?!? That’s a little too gangsta for me…)
donuts of course.. but I just came from the pantry with malt vinegar chips….and honey roasted peanuts and bbq chips. rather have a donut – LizzieC
(Donut entree with a side of chips?)
my husband Lex, covered in chocolate syrup.

I am a saint. I never eat at midnight. Elyse 54.5
(Who knew sainting would be such hungry work…)

(How does Lex do it?!?)
I just eat sugar straight from the bag. Emily @ The Waiting
(Not sprinkled on raisins?)
Jiggs Dinner (fine Newfie Cuisine for any time of the day (SnB)
(Where every moose there knows your name?)
never in the fridge… *wicked grins* Red.
(I think the meal you’re talking about would melt everything in there anyway.)
Grippy – A peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of ice cold milk
(Until jelly revolts and takes its rightful place at the front of the sandwich!!!)
Potato Chips and David Beckham and Potato Chips! Gingerlicious
(A little too much oil there for one meal…)

(WE HAVE A WINNER!!! Sadly, I’ll have to take a rain check on the award dinner…)
Congratulations to the (formerly) anonymous culinary daredevil (Rutabaga the Mercenary Researcher)! And from the offered choices, the most popular was Whatever walks out of the fridge onto my plate. And I agree – let the food do the work. So congratulations to all of you lucky diners!

For this weeks poll, I’m calling on all of you armchair physicians to pull out all the anecdotes about your cousin’s-daughter’s-brother’s-best-friend’s-uncle’s-pool-cleaner to tell me about some of my symptoms.
well, one of my symptoms.
So diagnose as much as you like, but diagnose before 31 January, at 2359 EST, because that’s when this one closes. (Oh, and if you leave an “other” answer, write your name in too and I’ll link back to you next week.)
And to send you on your way, enjoy these.
First, I really have no idea what the most awkward part of this scene is. but it’s all funny.
And this, just because I’m easily amused. (And it’s got Selma in it, so Hotspur will like it.)
Have a great week, everyone!
Music, songs; live or die not by their own doing, you either like the orange for what is inside or you don’t. Music aside, the videos for the most part seem more like icing, candy and gobbly gook. So many that when something good comes along, it rolls you over leaving you breathless.
Here’s to pickles and ice cream, Salut!
Agreed, Hudson. But sometimes the video is also a great counterpoint/accent to the song and really does enhance it.
Not always, but sometimes…
I’m sorry I left such a disgusting mark in your mind from my post. I guess this means there will be no carrot and raisin salad for the Sunday Night Cook-Off any time soon? You’re welcome.
I find it odd that people are still so accepting of raisins, Emily.
Has mankind learned nothing?
Ah, how I love Friday Foolishness….another beauty….thanks Gauperino!! Happy Friday.
Thank you, Susan!
Have a great weekend.
You too….oh, and thanks for leaving the image of horrendous crap coming out of your nose!!
A fair few Beckhams in the answers Guap. He is lovely with stuffed mushrooms too.
I’m so tempted to say something about where mushrooms grow, GfB.
But no telling how Ginger Snaap would react…
Perish the thought!
Oh no, the flu! Hope you are feeling better, Guapo. (the references to Lex – so funny!) Thanks for the laughs today. Have a great weekend.
Thanks whitelady. Good enough to be back at work.
Hopefully not sick enough to infect everyone here.
The Delta Rae song sounds like something that could have been in the film, “Brother, Where Art Thou.” I like that kind of swampy, gothic sound. I always have.
Thanks for the shout out, my friend. I’m trying. Somebody reblogged last week’s post and told me I made them feel healthy and not so crazy. If that’s all I accomplish then I’ll be happy.
For some reason your videos are not coming up… I’ll check back later.
Have a great weekend!!!
Lisa
It ‘s a great sound, Lisa. Goes well with the Delta blues I love.
The Thursday series you’ve been doing is great stuff. i can’t imagine how many would benefit from those posts – simple, clear, usable.
Hope you keep them up!
BRRRRRAAAAIIIIINNNNNSSSSS stuffed haggis – with pickle & vanilla ice cream
Hee hee… that was mine….
Brilliant! …. and congrats.
Yes, I’m all kinds of ‘put all the answers together for an answer’ brilliant!!
Saw this right after you wrote it, and updated to give you full credit, Rutabaga!
You don’t have to!
Are you saying that my Beloved David Beckham is overly processed?? GASP!
And oily, Ginger. I said he was oily too.
Oily is fine…
Oh and, I LOVE FRIDAY FOOLISHNESS! LONGTIME!!
And it loves you!
Oh, and again? I voted already! 2 weeks in a row I voted on FRIDAY! Kenya believe it??
I know, right? It’s like you’re organized or something.
Who are you and what have you done with Ginger?!?
As sounds go, you can do a lot worse than gospel-y. Here’s a trend I don’t know if you’ve looked at yet: bearded folky-style singers with high voices (Bon Iver, Jim James, Ray Lamontagne, James Vincent McMorrow). I call the style “sissybeard,” but I mean it in a good way.
Amen, RossMurray.
Listened to some Ray Lamontagne and Bon Iver. Both left me flat.
I know they’re supposed to be great acts, but it was very not to my taste.
(I think I have cds on a giveaway pile somewhere…)
Looking forward to the opinions. There are always gems amongst the sameness. It’s finding them that is the challenge. Thanks for bringing that convo up.
Finding them, and getting people to see what you love about them, John.
Fortunately, a great song makes digging through all the muck worthwhile!
Does it ever. We live in a remarkable time for gold mining.
I think I’ve chose BRRRAAAAIIIINNNNSSSSS!!!!!!!! on everyone of these polls!
BRRRAAAAIIIINNNNSSSSS!!!!!!!! is the timeless, classic choice, Bats!
(And my personal favorite. I actully have no idea why it’s there in all the polls though.)
Poll? What poll? There was no poll when I read your post last week. Cheater!!!
The ways of The Guap are mysterious and inscrutable, Twin.
And occasionally ridiculously sloppy. I forgot to put in the code last week.
Sadly, “Peen” would have been the winner.
Ah well…
Dammit!!! Fouled again!!!
Bummer on the flu thing … glad you’re feeling a bit better … and dang it … another runner-up finish on the posts and the poll.
Gotta love I-gor and Young Frankenstein … first time seeing the Salma Hayek commercial … awesome. … good choice of music, so thanks John.
Thanks Frank.
Less “feeling better”, more “I’ve spent all the time I’m willing to being sick”.
I was surprised to find a Salma video I hadn’t seen from Hotspur already.
I’m on my lunch hour so this is allowed. Hope the flu is away and not bothering you anymore and you are securely on the rebound…maybe feeling almost ‘normal’ again? Take care and have a great weekend.
Gah! Glad they give you some break time Rogue.
Flu is easing off, but still very much there. Boss said I had to be in today, so my conscience is clear if the rest of the desk gets sick.
What is this “normal” you speak of?
Apparently polls don’t show up on iPads, because that’s what I’m using and I can’t see your poll. Poo. So instead I’ll just tell you that I’m sitting in a huge room of magicians listening to a magic lecture (well, listening is a relative term), and I am one of only two women I can see. Good times… (But my son is in heaven.)
Hope you’re feeling better.
I wonder if that means all the other women are invisible Carrie.
Glad your son is having a blast, and go you for sitting through it just so he can be there!
I believe it means they make the women vanish. I have to be extra careful…

Oh, hope you feel better, Guapo! That’s the pits. I loved the Selma milk ad, and her hair at the end. Ha ha. I hope you can enjoy your weekend. Get some rest.
I actually feel like she looks at the end of that video, Bumble.
Sadly, I don’t at all look like the male equivalent of her…
Thanks, hope your weekend is fun and sick-free!
Man, Guap–I hope you feel better. I hadn’t had the flu in 20 years (not an exaggeration) and then thanks to the three little disease factories that I live with, I’ve had it twice within the last year (Damn you, Chuck E. Cheese!). I hope you feel better–and pronto!
Great post today. What an awesome musical selection. I don’t listen to much new music, so I’m surprised to hear (if I’m hearing you right) that a lot of other bands have this sound, because it sounds really fresh and different to me. Gospel music is fun to listen to, but I hated to sing it in school–it’s a lot harder than it sounds.
I got a kick out of your Lex/Kryptonite joke.
I used to be stubborn (and young) enough to just ignore getting sick, Smak. But for me to stay home in bed for five days (and on a weekend too!) is unheard of.
Meh.
For every genre, there seems to be an establishing band, then everyone copies them. With Indie Rock especially, there’s an awful lot of sameness that’s kind of disappointing.
I’ve noticed a few bands putting out some gospel-type tunes, so far they sound different, aside from having that gospel-y feel.
I give up… who’s *%#$ do I have &*&@ to get my #*!+ in this &%$@#!*^&%@$% blog???
Right now, my self-esteem is leaking out of my nose.
Ok, is the problem that it isn’t showing you the Other answer you typed in? Because it doesn’t do that. (That’s why I started the whole response thing – since no one has any idea what anyone else saw).
I just saw your write in – something about stuff getting blown out of…places
I am just giving you a hard time for not putting any of my comments in as links. I am not really so desperate to get attention. I mean, if you hate me, I can live with that… sob… (HA!)
I have only my laziness to blame. This week rolled up on me fast, and by the time I circled back to identify yours, I was too far behind.
Already noted for this week though!
Well, I did sort of a throw away this time. Just wait until I do one that really makes you gag or laugh. Then hit me.
Well, since you wrote it in, I see no reason not to try and (gently) mock you in the replies next week…
Do not pull back on the mockery. Mock my socks off.
I’m just a simple girl Guaps! Think Pretty Woman “I’m a Safety Girl”
You’re much classier than Julia, Benze.
Yer just so nicccccccccccccccce
(Shhh! Don’t let that catch on or my street cred is shot, Rutabaga!)
That will be hard to keep under wraps, my friend!
Those vids are funny
.
Thanks NBI!
Hope you had a great weekend.
It’s awesome that I literally spent a good half hour of my Friday morning trying to figure out what was leaking out of your nose this week. As did dozens of others. This is how much we love you, Guapowitz!
Thanks Nicole Marie!
)
(But I’ve seen the write ins. Not so sure “love” is the word I’d use…
Hope you’re feeling better this week, Guap. Have a cup of hot tea with honey. It won’t do anything to heal you, but it tastes good. <3
Thanks Stacy.
Still trying to slough it off…
I sensed a great beauty and magic emanating from your blog, and sure enough, there it was… Salma Hayek. Ahhh… Thanks, buddy.
Glad you enjoyed it, Hotspur.
I was surprised I hadn’t seen that one on your site
Well, to be totally honest, I’ve been looking quite a lot at my wife lately.

Ya pinged me! Ahve been pinged! (How do you like my Southern drawl accent?)
Wha, yer drawl is as charmin’ as a fresh peach pahh on a warm spring evenin’.
(And much better than mine, Marie!)
I went with brains! it fits. lol.
Thanks Deanabo!
Lol I loved Linda Vernon’s answer! She’s a funny gal. I always get mad when I forget to do a post. It’s what I look forward to every week!
Linda has a talent for keeping me on my toes with these, Lily.
And I love the write-ins you come up with.
Aww thanks Guap!
I will always love you for posting Gene Wilder.
Thank you Speedo!
*looks for more Gene Wilder Videos*
Oh, I have to tell you that the ice-cream photograph saved my life!!!! Being trapped in this long winter dull days where everything and everywhere looks grey, suddenly, scoops of ice-cream I see on the screen, my mood has being lifted up again.
Ha! I remember that pic, ristinw.
A perfect cure for the winter grays!
Hope you’re feeling better El, the flu can really run the system down. I loved those clips, especially the milk one
Thanks Hugger.
I still feel like hell, just not quite so much.
I see my midnight snacks are lame compared to others..i need to up my snack game
have a good weekend EG
Even for those few at the top, there is always room to achieve more with snacks, FPP!
Love this poll. It’s interesting and disturbing to read what’s being consumed. Keep it up! Very entertaining and always feels like a party.
Thanks Absurdity – that’s exactly what I’m going for!
(Well, not the disturbing part.)
(As much…)
OMG Gaup! Laughing out loud at your quiz. Every single answer Hill Larry US!! You must have caught the flu from Steve Martin. (not that you’re not always as funny as Steve Martin . . . .wait a minute are there too many nots in that to make it an insult. Hope not!)
The music does have a spiritual beat. Very uplifting!
Thanks so much Linda!
And of course not! Maybe…
What hump?
The Salma commercial is really funny.
Hope your feeling better and the exorcists scenes are over.
Btw, the snails and salt answer was mine.
Sadly, sometimes my whole life feels like an exorcist scene, Doggy.
I’ve made a note, and full credit will be given next week.
If it looks anything like what comes out my first graders’ noses, then just wipe it on the desk and you’ll be fine.
I’ll keep that in mind for when my sleeves are drenched.
Um, can I wipe it on a coworkers desk instead? (They’ll appreciate me not using their sleeves any more.)
Hey, Hotspur ain’t got the market cornered on Salma appreciation! (Ya gotta love her in “Wild, Wild West”. What a cheeky sense of humour!
)
Gotta love her in everything, John!
Unless she was in a Spy Kids flick.
You can’t go wrong with a Young Frankenstein clip. That’s one of my all-time favorite movies.
Likewise Weebs.
That and Blazing Saddles.
YES. Mr. Weebles and I quote from both movies fairly often.
Love the Igor clip. So, get with the feeling better already. I was one who never felt qualms about infecting the entire staff when the boss was being a weed. I made a point to be in the office sneezing directly on the shiny spot on his head… you know, his nose.
Nice! I’ve warned the boss, Red. He said come in anyway.
My conscience is clear.
Sorry to hear about your bout with the flu. I hope you’re feeling better. As for that Delta, I love her big voice. Not sure what the hell is going on in the video, either. But the sound is great.
It’s all about the sound, Cayman.
Thanks!
It’s still Friday somewhere, right? No? Is that not how that works? Anyway, I love the song for the week. I agree there’s a lot of gospel/soul vibe going around but I am all for it. I’ll take it any day of the week over an autotuned mess. Also, is it your fault that I can’t stop listening to Fitz and the Tantrums? I think it is.
Sorry to hear about your nasal effluent. I hope you’ve returned to normal discharge levels since.
Thank you for adding
me to your side bar
What hump?
Oh, had a feeling you’d know the George line. Karnak told me.
Great post GuapOrama!
fuck. just noticed everyone else mentioned what hump. okay you take the bags, I’ll take the blonde you take the redhead.
-no redemption, I tell you I get no redemption!- ala Dangerfield voice
That’s ok. We’ll all meet again in Space Poll Two – the Quest For More Money.
Badum dum!
You’re the Groucho to my Chico. Or Harpo to my Groucho. Or Ritz Brothers to my Marx Brothers.
Eh, show me the moola!
Hope you’re feeling better this week, Guap, and less run down. I love the Delta song!
Thanks RoS.
Still stubbornly pretending I’m fine.
Soon hopefully…
Glad you liked the song! I think you’ll like tomorrow’s too!
Can’t wait! I have a tough day scheduled tomorrow (my dog is having a biopsy), so I’ll be ready for some good tunes and good foolishness!
Hope you get to rest up this weekend. I’d normally say “fake it til you make it”, but I don’t want you to overdo it and get sick again. Take care of yourself!
I saw your post on it, but didn’t get to comment (and wouldn’t click like).
I hope it all goes fast and easily!
(And I already know you’ll handle it in your inimitable style.)
Thanks Guap, I hope so too!
pickled cucumber with ice creams? good luck, don’t forget a spare roll
I made it right before the wire…the metaphorical wire being your next Friday Foolishness edition which happens to be tomorrow, or today if you live in Europe.
Europe is a nice place to work, but do people actually live there, Stacie?
I don’t think so. I think it’s like WonkaLand where people just visit and lick wallpaper and stuff.
